Students Helping Students, Filling the Tool Box!

October 01, 2015
By Sharon Pruett, Elementary Principal

"The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:40

The least of these…

What does that really mean? Who would you consider to be your “least?” People with less money? Older cars? Thrift store clothes?

How about children whose only fault was to be born into a family that struggles emotionally, financially and/or physically? Children who have no choice but to take life as it comes and spend a big portion of their time just trying to survive.  According to their principal, "these children are not short on love from their parents, nor are they short in smarts...they just have a smaller tool box of resources open to them than most".

New Covenant has a unique opportunity this year to partner with a local Title One Public School to minister to “the least of these.” According to the U.S. Department of Education, in order to be an eligible Title I school, at least 40% of a school's students must be from low-income families who qualify under the United States Census's definition of low-income.  At this particular school, 95% of the school's student population are on free or reduced lunches.  The Principal of the school was able to share with our students about some of the impoverished situations many of her children are dealing with on a day to day basis. It touched the hearts of adults and children alike.

In the coming weeks and months, our students will be videotaping the pledge of allegiance, reading of stories, and short skits to model good behavior. These will be shown to the students of the Title One School to help with instruction and encouragement. We will be collecting gently used stuffed animals, books and toys and are in the planning stages of being able to Skype with them in February.

NCA students have such a heart for ministering to others that they have already begun looking for ways they can bless these children, and broaden their tool box, so to speak.   I am so proud of their servant attitudes and am excited to see how this partnership will bless NCA as much or more than we are blessing them!
