PHILOSOPHY OF ART EDUCATION
Today art is taught from the perspective of DBAE (Discipline Based Art Education). DBAE refers to learning four art disciplines: Production (Studio), Art Criticism, Aesthetics, and Art History. These four categories will still be incorporated into lessons no matter what the age of the student. In NCA's Art class, students will show the same respect, discipline, dedication and work ethic that is required for any other class at New Covenant Academy. This is a class that grades must still be earned and work completed in a timely fashion.
INTERMEDIATE ART: (Meet once a week for 45min classes)
-5th grade/6th grade
COURSE CURRICULUM:
NCA students start with learning and reviewing the “Elements of Art” which are Color, Line, Shape, Texture, Value and Space. As the year progresses, we explore vocabulary within the Elements of Art like “abstract, foreground, middle ground, background, realistic, overlapping, balanced, symmetrical, organic or geometric.”
-
Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature and expression of beauty.
-
Art Criticism- will have basic discussions about opinions of master reproductions and why they think is different from other artists, why they think it is interesting, or what they might change about it to make it better.
-
Art History is basically educating the students about various artists, their styles, their place in history and why their work was important! We explore from the art of Cave paintings and Egyptian art all the way through time to Modern Art. The art curriculum for K-6th grade rotates on a 6 year cycle with different artists and time periods covered every year with different projects. A student can attend school at NCA for K-6 and never repeat a project or time period in art history!
