New Covenant Academy is governed by an independent, volunteer board of directors, composed of parents, grandparents and professionals within the community. Since the academy does not represent a single denomination, and is composed of over 97 Christian based churches within the greater Springfield area; board policy requires that there must not be more than two members from the same church operating on the board during a single term. Board members can serve a maximum of two, three year terms and must meet specific requirements per policy.
ROLE OF THE BOARD
The board convenes once a month on a routine basis and calls for sessions in between meetings as needed. The board hires, manages, and evaluates three employees; the Administrative Team Members (Lead Administrator, Elementary Principal and Business Administrator), the board approves of the hiring and firing of employees at the recommendation of the Administrative team. The board speaks with one voice, not many voices; therefore without a quorum and a majority vote, a formal decision cannot be passed. The board performs a fiduciary role and ensures financial solvency and integrity. The board does not handle the day-to-day opertaions of the school but functions as a policy maker. They ensure effective organizational planning, mission and basic values of the school's programs and services. They also serve as a "final court of appeals/judiciary board" for unresolved issues that may occasionally arise. The board approves the major goals/needs and the overall strategic plan of the school. The board is self-perpetuating, therefore they recruit new members with nominations from the New Covenant Academy constituency and take into consideration areas of expertise the board feels would benefit the Academy.
PROCESS FOR BECOMING A BOARD MEMBER
The Board Chairman, along with the Board members, and the Lead Administrator appoint a nominating committee for new members. This committee consists of 2 board members, the Lead Administrator, one elementary faculty member and one secondary division faculty member. (The Board Chairman is an ex-officio member of all board committees). In the spring, nominations are collected from the NCA parent and staff community by the Secretary of the board and turned over to the nominating committee for review. Nominees are called and notified of their nomination and confirm their willingness to serve. Once the candidate accepts a nomination, he/she is asked to complete an application with testimony and biography as well as a pastoral recommendation. Candidates are invited to be personally interviewed by the nominating committee, and pending a recommendation from the committee is voted in as a member by the entire board.
